Youth Development Guide:

The Youth Development Guide was created by the Community Network for Youth Development (CNYD), with support from the California After-School Partnership.  Although it was written for a school-based after school audience (practitioners, site coordinators, sponsors and administrators), the principles, practices and examples in the Guide are relevant to any youth-serving program or organization.

The Youth Development Guide focuses on translating the youth development approach from a set of compelling ideas into practical action. Though the Guide was primarily designed as a youth development orientation tool, it also includes:
  • Resources necessary for deeper exploration into key youth development practices,
  • Background research that supports the value of using the youth development approach, and
  • Specific and practical advice on how to strengthen individual staff practices and organizational policies in after school programs to support learning and young people's healthy development.
Each chapter in the Youth Development Guide presents descriptions of core youth development practices, provides hands-on examples of how to encourage and strengthen practices, and offers exercises to use with staff members on site. Chapters include:
  • Youth development approach
  • Youth development framework
  • Building physical and emotional safety
  • Encouraging relationship building
  • Providing meaningful opportunities for youth participation
  • Increasing community involvement
  • Promoting skill building
The Guide is available free of charge, but handling and postage charges will apply.
For each order, a base handling fee and postage will be charged.

YDN Publication Briefs:
YDN has created three policy briefs that help advance youth development approaches. Both an abstract and a full length brief are available on these issues. The Why Invest in Youth Development brief makes the case for why the youth development approach should matter and offers several policy suggestions related to expanding the quality and quantity of supports and opportunities for youth. The Civic Engagement and Service Learning brief provides an overview of service learning, why it is a powerful strategy for youth success, examples of service learning and youth civic engagement in the region and recommendations for schools, Community agencies and municipal governments to support service learning. The College Access and Success brief written for the Lumina Foundation, is a case study of the Hiram Johnson High School College Access project and includes some recommendations for action.
